University of Queensland PhD Scholarship in Quantum Physics in Australia

The Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for Engineered Quantum Systems (EQuS) is a major Australian research initiative established in 2011, bringing together researchers from The University of Queensland (administering organisation), The University of Sydney, Macquarie University, The University of Western Australia, and The University of New South Wales. There are a number of domestic and international partner institutions.

EQuS seeks to initiate the Quantum Era in the 21st century by engineering designer quantum systems. Through focussed and visionary research we will deliver new scientific insights and fundamentally new technical capabilities across a range of disciplines. Impacts of this work will improve the lives of Australians and people all over the world by producing breakthroughs in physics, engineering, chemistry, biology and medicine.

Within EQuS, Associate Professor Tom Stace leads a theoretical research group focused on solid-state quantum devices, quantum optics and quantum error correction, with close collaborations with a number of experimental groups.

We are seeking high-quality physics or mathematics graduates with either Honours (1st or 2A Class) or a Masters equivalent to commence a PhD in the above areas. The applicant should be highly motivated to pursue research in quantum science in these areas.

Information about the Centre may be accessed on the Centre's website here

Information about the Faculty and the School may be accessed here: School and Faculty.

Remuneration
The base stipend will be at the rate of AUD $25,849 per annum (2015 rate) tax-free for three years with the possibility of a six month extension in approved circumstances.

The candidate will have a 1st Class Honours degree or equivalent in physics or mathematics. Australian and New Zealand applicants should be eligible for an Australian Postgraduate Award (APA) or equivalent (for more information, please visit: http://www.uq.edu.au/grad-school/scholarships-and-fees). A strong grounding in quantum physics is desirable.

Mandatory requirements for applicants: 1. Excellent academic performance to Honours/Masters level, evidenced by a high Grade Point Average (GPA); and 2. International applicants must meet the University of Queensland's English Language Proficiency (ELP) requirements, detailed at http://www.uq.edu.au/grad-school/english-language-proficiency-requirements
