The Role

The successful PhD candidate will undertake the development (synthesis and characterization) of functional organic materials for opto-electronics (e.g., organic light-emitting transistors and lasers). The candidate will work under the supervision of Dr. Lo at UQ's Centre for Organic Photonics and Electronics (COPE) (

The Person

The candidate will have a 1st Class Honours degree or equivalent in chemistry. Australian and New Zealand applicants should be eligible for an Australian Postgraduate Award (APA) or equivalent (for more information, please visit: A strong background in synthetic chemistry is essential (
Mandatory requirements for applicants:
1. Excellent academic performance to Honours/Masters level, evidenced by a high Grade Point Average (GPA); and
2. International applicants must meet the University of Queensland's English Language Proficiency (ELP) requirements, detailed at
Desirable requirements for international applicants: At least 2 peer-reviewed research publications.

Scholarship Remuneration

Prospective students will be provided with assistance to apply for a scholarship. Domestic students will be expected to apply for an APA or equivalent scholarship, while international students will be expected to apply for UQ scholarships for international students for stipend and tuition support.
Students who are unable to win one of these scholarships may be considered for a stipend equivalent to an APA (in 2016, $26,288 per annum for tax-free) for three years with the possibility of a six month extension in approved circumstances.
