The Queensland Government has a clear vision for science and innovation at the heart of a prosperous and sustainable Queensland. Through the Advance Queensland initiative, major investment is being made to equip citizens with the skills for the new economy, attract and retain world-class research talent, accelerate the translation of science, and encourage entrepreneurship and innovation. The Chief Scientist plays a key role in delivering this vision.
Reporting to the Minister for Science, Innovation and the Digital Economy, the Chief Scientist provides strategic advice to the Premier, Ministers and departments across the Queensland Government. The role exists to:
  • advise government on science and innovation policy and priorities in meeting Queensland's social, economic and environmental challenges and opportunities
  • promote the public understanding of, and engagement with science, innovation and technology
  • drive continuous improvement in the quality and use of scientific evidence and advice in government
  • promote greater collaboration between the Queensland science base and businesses, industry and the community
  • build international science partnerships to strengthen Queensland's position as a global hub for research and innovation

The position of Queensland Chief Scientist is a specialist, part-time advisory appointment, commencing January 2017, and hosted within the Department of Science, Information Technology and Innovation.

The position requires a person who:
  • is a highly respected leader in the science and research community
  • accelerates the translation of research into commercial opportunities and societal benefits
  • builds strong and enduring relationships with stakeholders
  • communicates with influence
